iPod Hi-Fi aka "Take me outdoors and crack my iPod!"

Apple - iPod Hi-Fi was the big announcement today. Well there were some Intel Mac Minis as well. Giant surprise... but the Apple iPod Hi-Fi... really? That's it? Ok, everyone else made a much bigger deal about today's announcement than Apple did clearly. No "real" video iPod, no DVR, no iPony, etc... but the iPod Hi-Fi? In such a crowded market, this is there entry? Oh look it takes batteries... now that is genuinely exciting until you try to figure out two things... 1. how long is the battery life? and 2. I play a lot of out door volleyball and am continually looking for an outdoor iPod music solution. This is not it. This is an invitation to crack your iPod in half. One direct or even indirect hit on this thing with your iPod mounted from a volleyball, soccer ball, football, kite, frisbee, toddler, dog, pigeon, or drunken friend and your iPod is iToast. Pretty? Yes. Sounds good? I would expect no less. Functional? Ick. So I still wait for my perfect outdoor iPod solution.

Bottled Water Isn't Healthier Than Tap!

060224 Bottled Water 170

Bottled Water Isn't Healthier Than Tap, Report Reveals: Makes sense... drink clean water, destroy the planet. There's no winning.

Even when bottled water is safer to drink, campaigners say that the packaging is threatening environmental health.

Worldwide some 2.7 million tons (2.4 million metric tons) of plastic are used to bottle water each year, according to EPI.

The plastic most commonly used is polyethylene terepthalate (PET), which is derived from crude oil.

"Making bottles to meet Americans' demand for bottled water requires more than 1.5 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel some 100,000 U.S. cars for a year," EPI's Arnold said.

About 86 percent of plastic water bottles in the U.S. become garbage or litter, according to the Container Recycling Institute in Washington, D.C.

Plastic debris in the environment can take between 400 and 1,000 years to degrade.

Since I haven't had time to write about my favorite shows...

I figured I'd just paste in the IM chat I had with Brian about Battlestar Galactica and The Shield!

5:32 PM as always
5:32 PM hey, did you see this week's BSG?

5:34 PM yeah!
5:34 PM and really needed...
5:34 PM i felt the last few before were a bit lacking

5:34 PM yeah, there was a bit of a "dry spell" of one shots

5:34 PM exactly!
5:34 PM but still nothing on how he survived.

5:34 PM hey, if Caprica 6 died in the shockwave that wrecks Baltar's house - how believealbe is it that Baltar survived?

5:34 PM lol. we're on the same page

5:35 PM yeah - f'd up

5:35 PM do you think they'll address it at some point?

5:35 PM i thought that i'd let suspension of disbelief just let me suck it up, but after making a POINT of Caprica 6 NOT surviving...

5:35 PM do you think the writers have something in mind?

5:36 PM maybe there's something important there - between the shockwave and him showing up w the refugees on the hillside... lost time? he meets Jesus on the road to Damascus?

5:36 PM it must be a major point of discussion
5:36 PM it's bugged me since day 1

5:36 PM I would LIKE the writers to have something in mind

5:36 PM agreed.

5:36 PM act of Cylon god

5:36 PM on the shield side of things, forrest w has been awesome

5:36 PM absolutely
5:37 PM i LOVE that he's been brought in as a heavy this season, cuz he seems like such an unlikely heavy at first

5:37 PM have you watched all the prev seasons?

5:37 PM but so sneaky and shifty

5:37 PM yeah... really out of character and brilliant for him
5:37 PM he's going to win an emmy. much more interesting that glenn close

5:37 PM how many seasons has it been? i paid attention to the last two seasons, but early on only caught bits here and there, before I got my replayTV

5:37 PM 5 seasons
5:38 PM omg, season 1 is amazing.

5:38 PM i'll hafta go back for it, close up the gaps

Steve asks: Did you see the autistic boy in the basketball game video yet?

Alitalia... the airline from hellia...

Img 1104

Seriously, what kind of airline doesn't allow a Nintendo Game Boy? When I sat down today on the first leg of 15 hour trip, imagine my shock and awe when the flight attendant told my and my almost 5 year old travel companion that we couldn't use his Game Boy. I actually thought she meant that we couldn't use it before take off but in fact, she meant we couldn't use it at all on the flight. Alitalia even has gone so far as to print it on their "safety" cards. (See image above.) Honestly, nothing makes me feel safer than knowing that Super Mario Brothers could crash this plane. Wait, isn't Mario Italian? You'd think we'd get some exception. The Game Boy pictured on the safety card is also a Game Boy Color which is probably circa 1999... even the card's print date is 2001. Other things banned on this airline include any CD or DVD players and laptops can only be used if the optical drive is not operated during the flight. Come on... really? Do they really think with the 50+ people using their laptops that not one of them is using their DVD drive? Or that everyone on the plane is smart enough to turn off their wireless? At what point is this airline going to get into the new millennium and not go into panic mode the moment someone's digital watch starts to beep. [Note, due to connectivity issues, this was written a week ago but posted later. The date stamp shows the original time of writing.]

Multi-Touch Interaction Research

The Multi-Touch Interaction Research demo is one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. The video takes a while to load but it's completely worth it. Oh the possibilities.
